Three cross-eyed cables--where to put them?

I have three computers: two laptops (one Win XP Japanese, one win2k English) and a desktop running Win2k. All of these have networking cards but I am not sure if the software is installed for the desktop. (How do I tell?). I have a Buffalo 10/100 hub and three cross-eyed (wired?) cables.

I have been reading for two days and I am still unsure of what to do with these cables and machines to set up a home network on the same desk (It's a long desk!). I am on a dial up. (That's all there is to choose from here and only one provider!)

Any help you could give me would be appreciated. Where do I start?

Get 3 non-crossed cables.
Have desktop be internet server, have the desktop connect to the Uplink (fifth plug on hub), make sure Uplink option is turned on. Hook other 2 non-cossed cables to laptops.

If haven't dont this before you are going to end up killing yourself.

Tahnks Tony. The guy at the shop told me I needed cross wired cables!??

The hub I have has six plugs on the back named as follows:
X5, X4, X3, X2 and then it has this over the last two plugs:
X---1---ll

What now?

Your final comment is not too reassuring. What about those thousands who have never done this before?
