This Possible?

I am getting sick of opening my case when I want to do backups/storage so I am trying to find another method and turning a old PC into a storage system sounds good on paper :P

My thought process is I will still have to have a "main" with a OS installed (as I don't see it working without) but all I really need plugged in is a keyboard and then the part of figuring out how to connect the two systems.

I know I could "connect" the two via network but that wont work as my box is 40 feet from the original PC and I don't want to go under the house again ^-^ so I was thinking is it possible to link 2 systems via USB and if so can I treat it like a multi-drive system?

Example I click on the system icon then select C-D-E-F-G drives then drag and drop the files (so I can sort my drives out)

I dunno if this is possible and I can do network if its the only way but one way puts the PC in my room and the other makes me get up which after a 10 hour day I don't like to do :P

I put a wireless card in my pc in my living room because I didn't want to run 40 feet of ethernet.

It cost like $40 bucks and works perfect.

I don't do wireless... not secure no matter what you do. Though for $40 I can run the second line.

so you are setting up a home server?

I guess....I kinda view it as a drag and drop setup. I get say 100GB of files I wanna save so I boot up the second PC....it loads up and then I access it via main system and drag/drop the files I want to save.

Delete the originals on my main and power down the second system. Keeps my drives off when I am not using thus prolongs their life and keeps the files I wish to keep safe.

I might end up doing a RAID1 setup later down the road with 1TB drives though.

your right not to do wireless aswell as less secure its not as fast no matter what silly stats they put out there i tried connecting my desktop and laptop once using usb and got nothing if you want to transfer files btwn the two why dont you buy two small usb bluetooth adapters thats what i use day to day its not to good for mass bulk file transfer put for a few gb here and there its fine aswell it makes both machines workable with any other bluetooth device, phones, printers etc.

Well thanks for the help guys...after some reading there is no difference between a USB to USB and network setup.

The only difference is one costs me $10 and the other $30. I thought about external but I have to say they have some CRAPPY power supplies/parts so going to just run another cable under my house and do it that way I guess.

Thanks again.
