The 'xMac'

This is just a theoretical thing and not for a project or anything and is aimed at both PC and Mac users.

What would your ideal Mac be? This is aimed at desktops but laptops and other machines still count. Everything is a factor (including price).

For me it would be a desktop (not all in one) between the mini and the pro. A mid range, mid priced machine using desktop components (3.5" hard disks and full size RAM). It would be built into a mid sized case so it's easily user upgradable. That's where I feel the biggest whole in the mac lineup is.

For PC users who like the O/S but not the lineup what would make you switch?

For Mac users what would your ideal machine be?

No one would buy a mid-range tower because the imac is a million times more tempting, and is all the computer 95% of the population need.

IMO, the mac line up is pretty well sorted, but I wish the macbookpro was a little more affordable.

I think the machine itself is fine but I don't like the OS and why buy a Mac only to install Windows on it?

clearly not true when only 10% of the population can afford the overpriced junk over a custom built/prebuild windows system.

If you are in it for the Mac OS (which would confuse me why) then just build your own for alot cheaper and install mac on it.

What about all the people who want a Mac, already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse, might want to upgrade stuff in it or add another hard disk or something and want something a bit more powerful than the mac mini but less expensive than the mac pro?

IMO the Mac laptop line is pretty sorted but the desktop line is shocking!

I guess I disagree with you on "overpriced junk".

I built a nice gaming rig a couple summers ago and just bought a MBP for college.

Everything works together well on my MBP, Apple puts it all together, instead of Microsoft and various hardware manufacturers.

Plus I love having the Unix base, works awesome with ubuntu on my desktop.

Yea, I don't recon it's overpriced, I just think it seems that way coz people are comparing them with mid priced desktop machines which Apple don't make.

The iMacs are comparable in price with other all in ones and the laptops are comparable with other machines of the same spec.

There is a big gap in the mac market which could be filled by a mid desktop machine. I think loads more people would switch if they did.

a mini is apples' mid priced machine ($1500)

For me to buy an apple made computer you'd have to convince me that they didn't steal an open-source architecture and not only make is closed source, but force you to buy an entire computer from them just to have the privilege to run it. It would also have to be DX10 capable. It would have to look like it didnt come from ikea. It would not have an obnoxious cult following of idiots. It would have to have the same initiative usability as windows 7. I would have to be able to sync my zune with it.

One of the founding principles of apple is to not allow for biodegradability, so your dream machine is boned

The Mini is their mid priced machine (it's actually their cheapest) but your paying more for the fact that it's small. If it were larger it would be able to include better components for the same price and have things like a full desktop sized hard disk so it would be faster and more capable.

At the moment the iMac is the one aimed at the average user. The iMac is a nice machine but the problem with it is that I don't like the thought of having to buy a new monitor every time I bought a new PC.

I would be interested in seeing a Mac netbook. I still wouldn't buy it, because while I believe Macs are quality machines, I would be paying for a lot of features that I am not interested in.

Excatly, that's why I want them to make a mid desktop - with the iMac your paying more for a screen and keyboard and mouse - all things I already have.

I don't recon they will make a netbook and if they did make something similar then i don't recon it would be running OS X, I recon it'd be running something similar to the iPhone/iPod touch OS.

yea, we all know how to do this :D

But OS X on a netbook is going to be far from perfect as it's not designed to run at those screen resolutions. You'll only see half of stuff like settings. That's why I recon linux is perfect for netbooks.

If Apple wanted to make a netbook that ran OS X then they'd have to tweak the OS for it to work with screens that small.
