The Ethical Dilemma in the Use of Computers

What do you think of the ethical dilemma we are experiencing in the use of computers?
Either individual or with the sections of society in general.

What is the ethical delemma?

I know if I use the computer too long or too frequently, I can't sleep and don't feel well. But that's a physical dillemma. I don't think there is an ethical dilemma. There is a Physical dimemma. I also think that one who uses computers too much for things otherwise done easily without one would be dumbed down and therefore less productive in the real world. That could be a problem with our world, all the younger generations becoming dependant on computers. Also, there are people who are more at home on the computer than they are in the real world. I don't think I would call my decision to use a computer an ethical dilemma. However, it could be a phisical, mental, or social dilemma.

+1. This is very true.

could an ethical point of view be online shopping. I watch a lot of online shoppers go into a lot of debt. People dont think about things like they used to because products are so accessible to people now.

I am not sure if this hits in the area that you were looking for.....but I threw it out there anyway

You can get in det by going mad on the high street, debt hasn't been around since the internet came around, it has just got worse because of credit cards becoming more abundant in the last ~20 years (in the time of the internet too, coincidentally).

So far as i'm concerned, there isn't an ethical dilema. If you are referring to the affect to the environment from the power used to run the machine, the chemicals/energy to produce the parts, how we get rid of them etc, that isn't an issue with computers, that is an issue with all electrical components, and is, so far as I am concerned, a non-issue anyway

1. What 'ethical dilemma' are you talking about?

2. Is this some homework/assignment type question?

3. If not please explain so this thread can stay on-topic

The only area of ethics I see are:

(a) the anti-trust/anti-competitive practices levelled by some courts towards some software vendors (Hi Billy G)

(b) the issue of DDoS & hacking - but this is easily answered - both are against the law of the land - so the ethics is to obey the law or act outside the law as a criminal

(c) pirating - & once again the 'ethics' is simple - it is against the law of the land - so once again the ethics is to obey the law or act outside the law as a criminal

(d) spam/scammers - my ethics here is they all should be incarcerated :)

(e) virus/malware/phishing - my ethics here is they all should be lined up & shot :)
(if it wasn't for these guys our systems would perform so much faster freed from the system overheads of firewalls, antivirus, antimalware, etc programs)

Its just a school homework...
But if you ask me the ethical dillema then my answer would be the spread of uncontrollable porn sites! :D

There's an ethics paper in my IT degree but luckily I'm not enrolled in that class yet, because it kinda sounds like a yawn to me. Maybe it's about the ever constant privacy issues and content control of the internet. Good luck with the homework.
