The ability to search images?

While eating lunch today I was wondering whether it would possible to search for images similar to how you search using words. Eg you have an image and want to find its source(s) you drag it into the Google search bar for example, looks at each pixel, then looks for images with similar dimensions/pixel configuration. Would it use lots of processing power/bandwidth? I'm sure, I'm just more curious about whether it would be possible from a programming perspective...

Well....you can do that. just go to google images and drag a photo into the search bar. Just tried it and it didn't work that well, though.
