That outer silver ring on all CD/DVD media

Hello,

I'm new to the forums, and I have a question that has been on my mind for nearly week now. No one can seem to give me a straight answer on other forums. I'm hoping someone could kindly explain this to me.

I noticed a silver shiny aluminium silver ring around the circumference of CD/DVD's. It appears on both sides of the disc near the very edge. It's on blank media and commercial media such as PS2 games, PC games, music cd,s and DVD's. Is data writte on there or is it just a border around the disc. I visited many forums and no one seems to give me a straight answer.

So, does it contain data and can data be written to it? Or is it just a border around the edge of the discs?

so far as i know it cant be written too and acts as a border and sealer. There are various layers on a CD/DVD so the edge keeps them all together and seals it from possible exterior harm

on some disks i only have that ring on the inside.
wich leads me to the conclussion that the outer ring it basicly writable... but the CD/dvd would have to be written full for it to be used.

as for the ting on the inside.. I gues the laser eye in the players cant get that far to the center of the disk (because the engine that spins the disk is there too etc.) so that part is basicly not used.
also, it wouldnt supprise me if those rings function as buffer zones,.. as in, then you write data right on the edge,. its damaged really easely ;)

The main reason I'm asking is because I have two players that utilize disc brakes(primarily Slimline PS2 and mini dvd player) used to stop discs for when the tops come open. The brake comes in physical contact with that bright silver edge as I place a disc in it. It sits right on the under edge of the disc(bright thin silver ring) and then the brake gets pushed aside as you lock the disc into place. It basically fits itself around the disc. I believe its made that way, but I'm afraid that the brake could potentially scratch up whatever data could be on the edge. This is sort of the wrong forum for this, but the places I post tend to lack any sort of maturity. I apologize in advance.

I'll tell you right now I have absolutely no idea if any data is on it. Although, I'd imagine there's none, and also that the disc players would have been testing to make sure they don't cause data loss if anything is even there.
