test email

is there a way to find out if an email address is valid/functional without have to send a message to that address? if so is there a way to do it in large batches? i'm not spamming ppl i'm doing data entry for a website with a lot of old data and need to know if it is still good.

not sure if they are trials, fulls, betas, sharewares, but i think they do pretty much the same thing.
