if it's running xp pro, or some other osses like that you can use remote desktop connection which is built in, just set it up then whenever you want to connect to it use the client which is in most versions of windows. Also logmein.com is quite good, but is web based so remote desktop would probably be better if the server was on your local network

thanks. I tried that but no matter what computer i am on it says that the server cant connect to it. Heres a screen shot of the message. Thanks:

have you definately enabled remote desktop on the server, and have you checked the firewall isn't blocking it on both your pc and the server. And does that message come up before or after you get onto the logon screen?

Thanks. I enabled it, connect, it allows me. Then it asks for user name and passwords. I enter in the user name/passowrd and says "Unable to log you on because account rescrictions". Any ideas? Thanks again.

Right, on the server do the following:
right click my computer,
select properties
click the remote tab
then "select remote users"
And click add to add the user you want to logon to the allowed users list
to do this enter the name of the user, or a bit of it in the text window that appears then select check names and this will come up with the users, then just add them to the list

Hope this works for you, remote desktop can be a pain at times but is good when it's working

What user name should i enter? The user name of the server, or the user name of my computer that i want to connect to the server with? thanks

the user name of the server

Lee

Edit: i hope that works for you, if it doesn't hopefully someone else can explain, i am gonna sleep now, it's getting late in the UK :P

YEa i did that and the same thing happened. I did everything the microsft tuorial said but it still happens. If you know anything that would help i would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Ok, it sounds like your server i hating you

Firstly, see if you can log in as the Administrator user, which you would have setup during the xp install, that should always be allowed via remote desktop (i thinK)

then try this:
1. Click go into computer management, through control panel>Admionistrative tools>Computer management
2. In the left tab double click local users and groups
3. Then double click on groups
4. Then in the right pane double click on "Remote Desktop Users"
5. Finally check that the users that you want to be allowed to logon are there, if they aren't click add and go through the process to add them.
The users that yopu should add are the users on the server, not the user for your computer you are trying to connect to it with

Good Luck :D

Lee :)

it depends what the server is for, if you are only going to be using it for your own personal use so long as you check all files before you put them on, and it has a decent ifrewall tehn i would say it shoudl be fine without one, but if you are going to let other people upload stuff to it, then i would strongly reccomend an anti-virus just to be on the safe side, you wouldn't want a virus to wipe out the whole server :P
