System Backup

System backup. What should I back up and where?
I have formatted hard drive and tried to restore using Simple Backup but this does not work - the info is on CD-RW - and I have lost all my system settings.
You will gather that I am a newbie so really need some help on this one.
 
Oh Oh, you already formatted and just saved the info? After you reinstall th O/S reinstall the programms and use the Pograms themselves to acess the cd/rw. You won't be able to acess the data without the programs that created them, usually.
