switching from crossover to wireless???

I currently have 2 computers hooked to each other with a crossover cable. To be more specific, I have 2 dells that are 3 years old running XP. The only internet available here is dial-up. My computer has a phone line connected to it, with the other computer connected to it via a crossover cable. (network card to network card)

I am moving the 2nd computer to the other end of the house, too far away using my crossover cable. Is it possible to go wireless, if so what would I need, and what is an approximate price. Also I am thinking of attaching a third computer (a compaq running ME), which has not been connected up till now because it is too far away.

Well you could run the dial up connection to your computer 1, then crossover cable to a wireless router to the other PC.

You would need a wireless router $40-50 US
Wireless ethernet card 30-50$ US

Try to keep the same brand when purchasing both.
LINE OF SIGHT works best with wireless. If you live in a building with concrete walls, or steel interior wall frames it could mess the signal up.

How many wireless ethernet cards would i need, one for each computer? I have regular ethernet cards inside my computers now. Just running the crossover cable from one to the other. i am just trying to figure out if it is going to be a whole lot cheaper to just buy a larger crossover cable.

You only need 1 wireless card.

As he said:

Dial-up--->First Computer--->cable--->Wireless Router--->wireless card--->computer 2

So I buy a wireless card and a wireless router.

I use my exact set up on computer #1 (phone line dials, then crossover cable in ethernet card)
run the crossover cable to the wireless router
pop a wireless card into computer #2

This doesn't cound right, can someone please tell me what I have wrong?

You run the dial up connection to PC1.
Plug in an ethernet card, crossover it to WAN port of the (wireless)router.
Plug a wireless card into PC2, and connect to the router.

Would you mind checking the staples website and finding things that would work for me? The only remotely electronics place within 2 hours is staples. I tried checking their website, but all the networking stuff was confusing. I guess my comp. knowledge is out of date a bit. The cheaper the better, but I don't want junk or something that won't work for me. I have dial-up and pre-existing ethernet cards.

I have looked at the staples website, given links below... Belkin puts out a good product, some of the spftware they use on their routers could be a little easier to understand... but the price for the router with the card is a good price. If you already have a wireless card, try to match the router brand if possible...

You will need:
1-Wireless router $39.98
Belkin Wireless G broadband Router

1-Wireless ethernet card (unless you have one) $34.98
Belkin Wireless G Destop Adaptor

1-Cross over cable $6.98
shortest cable avail on staples.. 14 ft :)

(assuming you are using dektop computers)

Backup port on router

It would work best to find a router with a backup RS232 port which you could connect an external modem so the router does the dialing/username/password connection. Then all your PCs connect to the router via straight network cable.
