Switching Anti-Virus Software

After having Norton AV 2003 for 4 years, I will be switching to AVAST. I have had no problems with Norton, but am switching due to reviews and to update since I am running 2003 software. My question is that when I uninstall, should I just use the uninstall option from the start menu and use the Norton removal tool to clean up any pieces left or should I start with the Norton removal tool from their site to remove everything from the beginning?

I did this very same thing.

I went to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, and removed every Norton item I could find, one by one. That took care of everything, no problem.

Once you have run the uninstall option for Norton you can use an excellent freeware to cleanup any leftover entries in the system registry as all installed programs are listed in the main window of the free tool seen at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

Personally I never give too much credit to reviews on anything these days unless you know that they are total non biased towards a specific product. Beside Avast the other leading antivirus tools are AVG, AntiVir, and Kaspersky. With the RegCleaner good for all versions of Windows including Vista you can manually remove registry keys right in the opening window once the uninstall option is used if anything else is shown. For deeper edits that should be done by someone experienced with the registry itself.
