Surround sound Receiver question.

Ok so I wanted to build my OWN Surround sound system with my own subwoofer and speakers and my own boxes for the speakers and everything. but I keep looking and every stand alone 5.1,6.1, or 7.1 receivers only have subwoofer outputs, meaning like a composite cable to a self-powered subwoofer. Why do no receivers have powered subwoofer outputs. meaning you don't have to somehow build your own power supply for a subwoofer, because I have no idea how to be able to build something like that. am I missing something here?!?! Are the only things that have powered subwoofer outputs the darn home theatre systems with all the dvd players and mess like that. OR am I totally wrong and with stand alone receivers you don't just plug in the wire's you have to have a composite cable to connect it, but it will still power the subwoofer? thanks guys.

a 7.1 surround sound reciever will be described as an example 110 watts into 7 channels. Meaning the .1 is just a pass through for the subwoofer. in essence the reciever has 8 channels but not 8 discrete amps. You must use a powered subwoofer in order to acheive the proper sound. you can hook up a powerd sub woofer using hi level inputs, the binding posts on back of sub, but then this usually means using sattelites coming off of sub. Not recomended with todays new recievers.
If you plan on building your own powered sub woofer, go to partsexpress.com they have a few great amplifiers for subwoofer builds. This is the perfect place for all your speaker building needs.

these are called plate amplifiers. I have been wanting to get around to building my own powered sub and i planned on using one of these.

All subwoofers are powered. They are powered either internally or externally. If you want to use a sub with no built in power, you simply add a power amplifer between the sub out on the receiver and the speaker system.
