surround sound help

If I were to buy a 6 speaker Surround Sound system would I be possible for me to use it on a computer?

As long as your computer supports 5.1. Otherwise you'd need a new soundcard, or just stereo audio though the system

When you say "As long as your computer supports 5.1" do you mean the motherboard? and I don't really get when you said 5.1 what is the 5.1? I checked for onboard audio but all it says is
"Audio Chipset Azalia(HDA)
Audio Channels 8 Channels"

where should I check!?

if it says 8 channels than your fine. He is referring to 5.1 as 5 speakers plus the subwoofer. The subwoofer is always named as .1. So your sound on your motherboard is capable of 7.1 channels. 7 Speakers plus one subwoofer = 8 channels
