Hi guys,

for christmas i built my own computer and had alot of advice from this forum for what i should buy, how to build etc

I am really big into my blu ray/HD/mkv films and love having surround sound with it, I have a sony DAV DZ260 surround sound that worked perfectly for my PS3 ETC

but now i have connected my copmputer with it and only the front 3 speakers are working with it instead of all 5, so basically i am only getting sound from the front 3 speakers (right, centre, left) but no surround from the 2 back ones

I have connnected my computer via optical lead to the surround sound, should i use a HD lead instead ?

Please any advice on what i should do would be greatly appiciated

thanks

What are you playing on the computer? If you play stereo files and such it won't have surround sound unless there's some sort of built in mixer in your receiver.

You may also need to check the settings of your sound card to be sure it is set to 5.1 channel audio. The default is usually just basic stereo.

well i tried playing scarface dvd and on thre back of the dvd it said 5.1 audio so wouldnt that work ?

I go onto control panel and go on the device and press properties, and then i click onto advanced, and there is a drop down menu under default format and it says select the sample rate and bit depth to be used when running in shared mode

and all there is in the drop down menu is:

2 channel, 16bit, 44100hz (cd quality)

and then all the way down to

2 channel, 24bit, 19200hz (studio quality

what do i do

Most of the time you will need a program that supports dolby digital decoding in order to output analogue 5.1 surround sound.

could you guide me through what settings i need ? because i have just tried with the home cinema and ac3 and its still not working :/

im playing avatar 1080p which is an mkv file on my computer and surround sound still wont work, when i try an dvd which has 5.1 surround ie scarface, it still does not work :/

If you have the money, the easiest solution would be to just buy a reasonably priced sound card that supports 5.1 considering you will then be getting the authentic surround experience and not a simulated one with plugins and such.

If your sound card doesn't support surround sound optical output then you're going to have a hard to making it work. You can try playing around with the different sound modes on your receiver. Otherwise, just buy a sound card that actually supports surround sound out.
