Studying for A+ Cert

What are you using A+ for? To be honest it's one of those certs that really doesn't have a whole lot of value in the business world, CCIE, CCNA, and CCNP are the ones you should really be studying, that is if you want to get into the networking field.

I'm using it to get a job during the summers I have off of school. At like a local PC repair place or something.

Gotcha, one of the few places besides Geek Squad which look for A+ :D

I always found that taking practice exams helped me the most when studying for exams.

Ok but how do I get better at taking practice exams? I've taken about 4 or 5 now and I still do really bad on all of them. Is it just the exposure to the tests and the questions that make someone better at taking the exams?

Do you know what questions you got wrong? I would say do some Googling on the questions you got wrong and see if you can find some good websites to help you study. Wikipedia can also be a great resource.

Ive just passed the first A+ test, got the next one coming up soon.

Take a look for the A+ book by Mike Meyers, i found the stuff inside it is very helpful, as it seems to cover everything that is needed.

Yeah when I done my A+ & Network+ I non-stopped read the Mike Meyers book's along with boson practice questions.

I agree, but CCIE are you freaking kidding me? Yeah you get your IE you won't have a job with a company, you will be a field engineer going from ISP to ISP fixing their problems and charging your ridiculous hourly fee. CCIE is also no joke and most people fail it the first few times they take the test.

CCNA is easy and is just as throw away as the A+ in my opinion. Anyone can buy a book and pass a test. CCNP probably requires that you have some hands on experience to pass it.

To be honest in my opinion Cisco certs are starting to waver down. I think that Directory Services is going to be the next hot thing. AD/OD/ED, and integrating and mixing them all. Lots of companies are migrating to Linux based back end servers these days for licensing costs while maintaining Windows clients. They are also deploying virtual machines to terminals more often too, which is also driven by a Linux back end. While MCSA and MCSE are also two great ones to have, there are others too which I think are great. The fact that I know Unix gives me a slight advantage but keeps me in a niche as well. Plus the Winders server admins never like any Unix/Linux/OS X guys and if anything breaks it is never Windows fault....but that is a whole other story.

Mac has just over a 8% market share, and while last quarter it dropped from 9% they are gaining and I can see them catching up for many reasons. One of them for being that their servers are very much competitively priced and their servers can run any OS including Windows Server.

A+ does what it does, and it shows that you know a broad range of basic skills. It is great for an entry level tech or help desk job which gets your foot in the door.
