I've 2 computer connected using crossover cable and share 1 internet connection. My computer acts as gateway. Internet, file and printer sharing worked beautifully until few days ago I found 1 very strange problem. The Local Area Connection status icon which located at tray on both computers are always on although no activity going on. I've checked the status and there always bytes being sent and received. Can someone figure out for me what are these 2 computers sending to each others and how to stop this. This never happened before and seems like our ICS affected by it. The client computer often couldn't browse any website or log in with IM and I've to re-run the set up home networking wizard again  . Please help me to solve this. Thank you. :)

It could be spyware/adaware/or virus. Im assuming since you use one computer as a gateway to another that your cable/dsl connection is connected directly to your computer. Do you have any software firewall running? DL and run adaware, spybot, MS Anti-spyware, and use an online virus scanner. If all is clear, try updating the drivers for all NICs. I highly suggest you invest in a router....it makes networking a lot easier and secure. Let us know how it goes.

is the network still working, ie can you use internet on both computers. if so then leave it, its not doing any harm. if not, then follow thisand it should work

in the device manager, under "network adapters" it should have, on the computer with the modem, the modem and ethernet card/onboard ethernet, and on the second computer it should just have the ethernet adapter. right click each one and uninstall. then at the top, click action > scan for new hardware. itll pick up the network adapters using either the windows drivers, or the drivers installed previously. it should run the network wizard too. if it doesnt, run it manually, making sure the workgroup name is the same on each computer. then go into control panel > network connections, there should be 2, one for LAN the other for broadband. they'll both say connected and one should say shared, the shared one being the broadband. if it isnt shared, right click it > properties > advanced > allow other users....... and of course, if it hasnt run automatically, run the same on the second computer, in the network connections folder, there should be 2 also, a LAN one and a gateway i think is the other one. make sure to follow the network set up correctly ie which computer is host etc. if it doesnt work post back.

Any recommendation for good router???

Thanks guys for the help and sorry for keep you waiting so long for my reply. I've solved the problem using classic way by reformat and reinstall everything and now my network working properly again. But it took me 1 day to finish it. Fuih what a tiring job. I'll follow your advice randruff by investing in a router. But can someone tell me what the difference between router and switch? I want to buy a router which have wireless capabilities as well and I prefer have a very good wireless securities features and good firewall. Any recommendation guys?? Any brand or type which is good??

Switches basically make the connections (directed connections, without letting broadcasts through). Routers are designed to connect 2 different networks together, (usually in homes that means your home LAN and the Internet). DSL/Cable routers now days come usually with a builtin switch on the LAN side, and imbedded firewall capabilities, (also other stuff, dhcp, NAT, etc...). You want a router, get one with an SPI firewall (you won't need to bother with a software one on your pc at that point, if you so desire... [I don't run a software firewall on my pc]). :) I use the Linksys 54G wireless router, with Linksys cards for the pcs. :D

its not dont worry, alot of people have network problems, and how he came to the conclusion of a dying computer form a newtwork problem i have no idea!

prolly just trying to be an arse. your computer is not dying, its fine. problems here and there is a normal occurance.

why my computer is dying???

I'm not good with Networking but you can trust me when I say your computer is not dying because of your network problem. backseatgunner was prob. joking but he/she is not going to make friends very fast with posts like that :P. I offer no advice but that because as I've said I'm just not good with networking.
