Still no sound

Thatsd a whole bundle of info you gave us there man, wow, im overwhelmed by the fact your crying. What are yoiu system specs and sound card make and speakers.

i think it has something to do with the windows system...cos when i installed the windows on July 1st(not sure), it worked well, no probelms. but maybe on July 4 or something, when i got up to start my windows, there was no sound any more...there is still sound when i play movies or run 'the sims 2', but there is no sound on yahoo messenger, msn, and windows alert sound ect...i rememeber the night be4 that, i installed a software (K-lite codec pack-a software to provide the subtitles for the movies in windows media), and it seemed that the instalation didnt work well, cos my computer was dead after that. ...i dont think it's my hi-fi's problem, cos when i use earphone, there is still no sound.
also, i re-installed my sound card for like 4 times, but it doesnt help at all...so i am wondering if u guys have met such kinda problems before, and whether it's some kinda virus or something...

and i am sure that if i re-install my windows again, it will work again. but all i wanna know is that if there is any ways that i can repair this and not installing windows again.

...

well...guys, i have to admit that i am not much of a desk computer lover, so i am not so familiar with my computer's systems...i just bought it...

but i do really appreciate your help and attention...but the problem remains...

anyway i think my situation is rather unique.maybe nobody can help me

Try reinstalling the codecs that you installed right before it started doing this. Try installing different codecs if need be. Your computer didn't just decide that it hates you, it's doing it for a reason, and seeing as reinstalling Windows (you mentioned you would, I'm assuming you did) didn't do ya a lick of good, and neither did reinstalling the drivers, it's almost definitely a software problem. Make sure that all your volume controls are set to full volume, and aren't muted (the program in windows 98 is "sndvol32", I don't know if it's the same for XP). If your sound drivers came with a mixer/equilizer/volume control program, then check that and make sure everything's set correctly. If anyone else knows of something that might help, mention it.
