Startup problems

I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but I feel it's become enough of a concern to warrant a thread. I've been having some major startup problems with this computer, and it's quite an ongoing case. There's a couple different messages I get when I startup and sit through black screen after black screen:

DMI error
error code oxc00000e9
disc read error

I don't know why this is still happening, I figured if it was a problem with the hard drive it would have just stopped working completely. It stands to question, what could be giving me these errors? I have tried a partial os restore, but the problem persists. I can't seem to get my stuff backed up correctly, as when I attempt to use a flash drive to do so it winds up crashing the computer for some reason.

Is there a better way to back it up so I can do a full os restore? This computer isn't very high end(it's not the one in my sig), but I do need files from it and another hard drive to a newer more capable rig that I am building. I don't want to call geek squad or some expensive technician to come out and do nothing to help, so I thought i'd ask here. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Most likely a bad hard drive but could be motherboard or bad controller. Try downloading and running the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it. What brand hard drive is it?
