starting my own isp service

well im sure alots of people ask this question and its not right saying that the people who doesnt know how to setup there own isp all i was asking what all i need but anyways i got the information so.

Not sure what the scene is like in America, but here in Australia, you can setup your own ISP, by using the technology and infrastructure of a larger technology company, but do the billing and customer support yourself. But that does require a sizeable investment, being able to provide around the clock support, etc You would need a large cash base to do something like that, as the tech company whose services that you would be reselling need to make sure that you are financially secure. In America, I am not sure what things are like, things may be easier.
Probably better to look at starting a web hosting service, and then if you are very successful at that look at expanding to becoming an ISP.

If you don't know then you probably should not do it.

Exactly.......... Stuff like this is not as easy as you think theres tones of knowlodge u need to know ... if your very instreasted in still doing it try and see if there is any basic courses you can take anywhere to get a rough idea at least...

When you have companies like PeoplePC offering dialup for $5 a month, or SBC DSL for $15 a month... I don't think it's pofitable for the little guy anymore...

unless a monopoly in say a hometown with a lack of service was offered... need to find your niche, what sets you apart?

well see im also thinking about starting a wisp and isp for my rural area because i know that there is alots of farm and farmers doenst have the internet and maybe if i can get the wisp started in my small town i can offer it for a good price.

i'm on a farming propety in Australia, and because our access to highspeed internet is limited, we can get a government grant to purchase a sattelite and connect to broadband that way...
I hate to be skeptical and give a negative vibe....
I'm not sure if theres a similar thing where you are, but if there is, well... good luck!

see where i live? yeah thats rural Missouri for ya right there, lots of farms and farmers where i come from, and ya know what? the vast majority of them dont even have a computer, or dont know how to use one, or have no interest or desire to do so, these are the kind of people that usually have very little interest in letting technology become a bigger part of their lives, so you might ask around and see if people would even be interested in having the internet in your town...im not trying to discourage you, im just saying that rural towns and farms arent going to be the biggest cash crop in the world.

Hi Guys
I just want to know what all I need to start my own isp service?

For one thing, you cant just have a Cable, DSL, Dial-up, or T1 line to become an ISP. You would need OC, or if you were only getting a few people service, you could go with a T3, although these services costs in the thousands to tens of thousands of dollars a month, most likely you couldnt afford it. You would also need some kind of servers or something, not sure what though.

Think of your company (ISP) as being a router, and all the people that have service through you, plug into your router and get internet access.

Man, some of you guys are slamming this guy! Of course there is alot to learn, of course its a steep uphill battle against corporate monopolies and such but its great that someone has the balls to try and offer an alternative. Midwest, my advice to you is ultimatly do what it is you want, just make sure you are 100% prepared. Research it, research it, and research it some more. Good Luck!
