Starting down the long road of tweaking...

Hello all,

Apologies if this is so newbie-ish.

Would like to start tweaking my DSL connection. So I'd like to:
1)Install high-end brand new wall jack (do these things even exist high-end wise?)

2)Connect wall jack to Netgear wireless ADSL Firewall router with some kinda high-end cable (like how audio enthusiasts use those gold-plated-anaconda-cables).

3)Make this cable as short as possible (is it 'attenuation' what I'm looking for?)

I know I can't do anything about the wiring in the building (old apartment complex), so I'm trying to make the most of it on my end. I didn't know where to start so I guess the basic wall connection is a good launching point.

Will the above make a difference? Or is this a good foundation to build on to see results in the future?

Next step: tweaking Netgear device mentioned above.

Long-range goal: web conferencing with family around the world (too lofty?)

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well your dsl connection will only be AS FAST as your slowest cable... So if your company ran optical wires to your building, and thn you installed optical wires in your house... the apartment building is still copper. The fastest the connection will be able to go is slowed by the copper. So in the end your "high end wall socket" (if it exists), and high end cabling is all for nothing. You may want to get someone else to confirm this, but this is my opinion. Web conferencing should not be a problem with your current dsl.. What kind of speed tests are you going to get?

Won't do much at all, not that you will be able to tell anyways.

Also what speed is your DSL? you should be cabable of your long range goal already, and if not, you could just get a better IPS that is faster, but you should be fine already anyways.

Sorry for delayed reply. Was out of town...

Trizoy, Xycron, thanks for your input, am learning a heck of a lot just by reading past posts.

You both asked what speeds I get. Pacific internet ISP:

Downloads: up to 1500 kbps
Uploads: up to 350 kbps

So based on ya'lls advice, I'll nix the wall jack/cabling/router tuning ideas and focus more on software side.
