ok i have 2 good computers
1. AMD2800 2.4 ghz, 512ram, 200gb HD XP Pro, Nvidia 5500
2. AMD3500 2.2ghz AM2 64, 1gb ram, 200gb, XP Pro
so there both good computers, i was wondering how i could get them both running on the internet quickly?
at my house theres 3 comps hooked to the net, 1 not mine, and we have a router, i would like to start a Game server on one of the computer, i was wondering how i would go about doing that? and i read something a botu UNix, should one comp run unix to host the server. And as it is with 1 comp gaming and the other on the net it slows right down, and tricks to make them both run fast
thanks in advance

Indeed, for one it depends on what game you're trying to run a server for, as some won't function within a Unix base system (unless you attempt to emulate, but it would be best to just stick with Windows if it's a Windows platform game).

I wouldn't use either of them to run a server, especially a game server, but that's just me (and yes, I know something about servers, I have three of them sitting beside me).

It depends entirely on the game, if it's an older game (UT GOTY for example) those would make fine servers to run such a game, depending on the bot usage and how else the game server settings are configured.

sorry to be naggy, but i ge tmy second comp back in a few days and id like to start it up as soon as possible, maybe even run 2 servers
thanks

Well running two servers for one game is a little bizzare as you wouldn't need to. First thing you need to do is configure the server, so install the game on that server, and when you load up the game, within the main menu somewhere you should see a host/own server option, click on that, enter the correct information and then click apply, it should then host your server (you won't see the game running as in people running around the map, you'll only see text within a console sorta thing), and then from your other computer you connect to the server using the local IP address for that machine. That's it.

Have a read of this from the Jolt server website, they host it via a proper method: http://www.rtcw.jolt.co.uk/content/enemy_territory/server_guide/index.html but for your situation you'd be best doing it the way I said.

ya, sorry if iw asnt clear.... i understand how to set it up and play, i just cant get it to not be laggy, and glitch. I host on one comp, and play on the other and it gets laggy.

Is it possible for you to make a dual processor server with a couple of gigs of RAM? That would be ideal. As for bandwidth, personally I am having better luck with DSL than cable. You seem to get better pings with DSL. There is a qualification to that though.. It depends how close you are to the switch. If you are within a couple of miles it is all good. The further you get after that, the worse it gets and then cable is the only real option.

Doesnt he mean locally over the Internal network he has at home? Or do you actually mean over the Internet?

i mean have a server and whoever sees the server can join up so people from America and Canada. I got a router and cables to hook em both up but is there a way to make it my connection is faster, liek bandwidth. You know when you got a 2 different comp running at 2 different houses everything runs really great, theres gotta be a way to do it from one house.

There isn't. You only have so much bandwidth to your house. Anything you try to get around that is against the TOS and your ISP will terminate your account. That's why you want DSL if at all possible. You aren't sharing your bandwidth with the whole neighborhood.
