Sporadic audio loss in Headset

Hi all,

I'm having some problems with my headset (headphones / microphone) which is only very new (~1 month or so). Basically, I've had a headset before which was getting intermittent with the audio. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the cable was a bit chewed up near the jack, so assumed that was the cause of it, so I went out and bought these professional looking, slightly more expensive HP ones after I'd started getting going with online games and such. They're a HP set, but unfortunately, I do not remember the model number, as I've discarded the box :-(

Basically, they've been ok for a while, but have started doing the same thing. I'm not very technically minded when it comes to audio, so I'll describe it as simply as possible.

When playing games / listening to stuff on YouTube, certain parts of the audio go very quiet, and intermittent with a minor crackling noise every now and then. Voices are the main things that go quiet, which obviously is a problem for online gaming, as most of the in-game sounds are fine, whereas the voices can be fine one moment, start crackling and then go insanely quiet for a couple of seconds. It's all very intermittent and not easily re-produced. I've had a break from my headset for a week or so due to my frustration, then went to play Planetside 2 tonight, and it seemed fine throughout that, although I wasn't really talking to anybody, so didn't notice any audio loss. I then went to play another game, and the music was definitely crackling in places and there was some audio loss (the game has some bagpipe soundtracks in it, and it was mainly the bagpipes which were getting lost).

I apologize for the shoddiness of this post... I'm normally ok with computers but this sound trouble has got me in a right mood. It's a custom built computer, and the built-in sound drivers are RealTek HD.

When sound is coming out of my normal stereo speakers, there are no problems whatsoever. Does anybody have any experience / advice on this? I find it unlikely that another headset has gone on me and I will be very annoyed as they were quite expensive!!

Have you tried connecting the headphones to the rear audio connection? I would try that and see if the issues persist. If they dont, then you know you have an issue with the front audio port. In some cases it's easy to replace and some aren't. Good luck!
