there is an optical option but my question can optical produce 5.1 channel suround sound?

yes! it seems like it....you will see the colour at the end, and you need to match the jacks, very simple.
Enjoy your speakers!

The Z-5500s have both digital optical and digital coaxial inputs.
Optical is made to produce 5.1 surround its DIGITAL so of course its gona produce 5.1 surround sound Dolby digital or DTS

Only do this if you don't have a sound card with a DAC as good as the one in the control pod of the Z-5500s.

If you do it, you won't get games in surround sound, and you'll only get two channel audio in all applications, excluding movies.

Remember, if you do this with a sound card such as any of the X-Fi's, you're losing the entire reason you bought the card: the quality analog that comes with the X-Fi.

Pretty sure I remember reading it only produced it for movies, games don't work in true 5.1.

The sounds from the front speakers get routed around to the back speakers.

Hopefully this helps. MAKE SURE to read the whole thing.

Well than how come when u buy a digital cable or digital surround sound system it also says now u can Enjoy Music in digital. THo it cant be Dolby Digital it still might produce digital clearer sounds than analog. and in some music the front speakers sound does not get routed to the back. The surround back speakers sometimes plays cheering in live music or the back up singers. or other sounds.

I have never professed to be smart when it comes to computer audio and I'm not going to start now.

Can't help you on that one mate.

When you listen to music at a concert, do you go for the music or the cheering of the crowd around you? Unless you're different than most people I know, you go for the music.

Now, when you listen to music at home, is the number one goal not to reproduce the music as accurately as possible? If you're at a concert, the music is IN FRONT of you. If you have music playing from rear speakers, this throws the soundstange off by pulling it back, thereby taking away from the accuracy of the musical reproduction.
