speaker wires

well i have a somewhat old set of logitech z-640's i got from my brother they are 5.1 and they arent working(kind of) not all of the speakers work at the same time the bass has always worked then itll either be a rear or front speaker that works and the other 3 wont it has switched between all speakers so i know theres nothing wrong with an individual speaker and the center has worked and also works with the matrix button when the front satellites are working....

after playing with them for a while i noticed if i move the wires(not the plugs) around a lot then the sound will come in and out on the corresponding speakers(i.e rear wire rear speaker(s))I googled the problem and havent really found anything, i can sometimes get the wire in a position where the speakers will play sound but not all of them and it goes out a lot and I have to fix it which is quite annoying

any help is appreciated and here are my specs:
cpu-sempron 64 3400 overclocked 2.4ghz
mobo-Biostar tforce 6100
soundcard-sb live! 5.1 digital(tested with other speakers and it works fine was actully a replacment for the onboard when i saw this was happening)
speakers-Logitech z-640 5.1
gpu-onboard geforce 6100
mem-1x512mb rosewill ddr 333 1x512mb gigaram ddr 333
os-windows xp pro x64

thank you:)

update- i spliced the wire in a section that i found defective then soldered the wires together after testing them i found that the problem still persists and it is a short in the ground because if i ground the speaker wire(with my fingers) then i get sound so in other words id have to search the entire length of the cable to find the short so ive decided to buy new speakers i cant find the z-640 center by itself so ill be buying a whole new set and was wondering if any1 could tell me if the x-530's by logitech would be a good replacment ive decided on those or another set of z-640's off ebay
