Speaker comparison, which to use?

I currently have two computer speaker systems. I am not knowledgable of speaker terminology or speakers in general. Can someone tell which one to the two I own would be the best for my computer. The first is a Altec Lansing ADA880 (a few years old and now used on my new computer) and the other is one that came with my new Dell computer, (XPS700 w/X-Fi PCI Sound card) it is a Dell MMS 5650 5.1 surround 6-piece set. I have read the tech stuff on both but it means nothing to me. Thank you.

well honestly, the ones that came with dell, are probably better just becuase they are newer but your old skool Altec is still def. good. I still use my 6 year old westwood speakers. They still sound amazing lol. If i had to choose, I would stick with the Altec but if i had a choice, i would much rather go buy some diesal speakers.

Actually they both came with a Dell computer, I am using the Altec speakers that came with the old computer. I don't know enough about speakers to know it the one that came with my new computer was better then the old one or not. Thanks for the reply.

I work as a sound technican, and I would go with the Altec speakers. I often find their equipment decent, and to be honest, free speakers are genrally of a poor quality.

Test each set of speakers at the volume that you will use them most, using a the most likely source for you, ie a DVD, or an MP3 track. See if either distort, or which set give the best bass response.

You could always use a mini jack splitter, to split the signal to each set of speakers to have a 'monster' setup, and make the most of the sub with the dell system.
