Speaker brands - music. Need advice.

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice from an Audiophile.

I have just got a Yamaha RX-V357 on eBay. Not fantastic, but it's my first separates system and my parents have always had Yamaha.

I now need some speakers. At richersounds they have several Eltax speakers quite cheap. Is this brand any good? Can you suggest some speakers that will match this amplifier. Doesn't have to be new, can you suggest some speakers that are commonly sold second hand? Im in the UK. My budget is upto £150 max new, £100 second hand (maybe flexible). I will use it for music, with a CD player and from my computer (with decent optical soundcard). I am going to get just a pair of speakers to start with, so no 5.1 yet!

Thanks for any advice you can give me, Doug.

(This may need to be moved to off topic - feel free to do so!)

I like the look of that amp, I'm sure it's very good - forget the fancy names in audio, most don't deliver! One thing you can almost always be assured of is that sony and yamaha will produce good products!

Are you just looking for 2 speakers? Or a 5.1 setup?

Using that richersounds website (I think they're bunch of chancers personally, a bit "geezer at the market", but they are quite cheap), I don't recognise most of the names! I did have a small set of Mordaunt Shorts, which I see they have a pair for £115. They were very good, I always liked them. I wouldn't bother with the tannoys - anything they do under 500 is a bit rough (and even over it aint that great).

If you're after 5.1, I don't have a clue! I see tannoy have a 150 buck set, but I'm not sure how your amp deals with active subs and what not, so you'd be best giving them a shout.

I meant to mention that. At the moment I am going to go for a pair of decent speakers - maybe get another two for surround later on. The amp has 'analogue mixdown', were it takes the centre and sub and puts it in the front two channels.

My Dad has always had Yamaha and B&W - but their a bit pricey. I'm not in any kind of hurry so I will keep looking in the adtrader until something comes up.

Cheers, Doug.
