SPDIF 5.1 optical problems

I'm having problems figuring out how to get a 5.1 signal from my pc to my 5.1 surround system. They are connected via SPDIF optical cable and my surround system supports DTS and Dolby digital. It works when i do the test in windows 7 ultimate and i can hear it play on each individual speaker and the 5.1 works on my xbox through the optical cable, but on the PC the back two speakers don't play anything when im watching movies or playing games, why is this happening?

On your surround sound system, does it show what speakers are active? I know when I had my 5.1 system connected via SPDIF when I launched most games or music player you would hear a click and it would default to 2.1 mode. The program itself needs to support 5.1, or the surround sound system needs to be able to convert the signal itself to 5.1 to simulate surround sound, since SPDIF is unprocessed audio.

I remember with my setup only a couple games worked with surround, so make sure the program settings are setup correctly as well.

I know on my computer, their is a Sp/dif connection and a 6ch direct connection. You have to go to your sound options and tell your pc to use the optical connection instead of the 6ch plug ins. 6ch is the computers defalt. I would tell you step by step, but i do not know what audio drivers you have.
