Spam in incoming name, but it's not spam

I'm getting messages and replies from friends that have "SPAM" in the subject line, but the messages are legit.

It's not really SPAM, as the messages are from friends in my Outlook Express address book, but the word shows up all the same.

any thoughts as to what could be causing it?

thx

It sounds like a spam filter is marking them as spam and adding that into the subject line. Do you use a third party spam filter?

Yes. I'm using Avast.

I suppose, by your question, I should be running one OR the other, but not both?

Check the settings in Avast and see if it has a setting to add a small line of text to mark something as spam. I know it has settings for clean and infected messages.

Thanks. I un-checked the box that indicated ****SPAM**** would be added to incoming emails, and we'll see what happens.

As I said, the incoming messages I'm getting are NOT really spam, as they're from mates of mine, but whenever I reply to them, I feel like I should remove the **SPAM** thing, and it's a bit tiresome!

thanks again.

Cheers
