Sound via HDMI video card

I have a Diamond Radeon HD 3870 video card. It has HDMI via a DVI converter (in other words, there is a DVI output, and the card came with an HDMI converter, which I plug into the DVI output).

The video card also has built in 5.1 channel sound, which theoratically, should be outputted via the HDMI. However therein lies my problem.

I connected the HDMI cable to my monitor which has built in speakers. There is no sound via the HDMI cable. When I plug in a SEPARATE 3.5 mm cable from my sound card to the monitor, there IS sound. So I know that the speakers work.

My question is how can the video card output sound via HDMI when the original output is DVI which only carries video?

it sounds like youre running video from the card's dvi through a dvi>hdmi converter into your hdmi monitor. i dont think dvi supports audio, which would be your problem. if the card had an hdmi slot it should work theoretically. the other less likely problem is that your monitor does not support audio via hdmi.

either way, sound via monitor sucks. just upgrade to a 5.1 system (2.1 at minimum).

As mentioned, DVI does NOT carry audio. This, converting from DVI to HDMI is video only.

Now some of the newer Radeon's do carry audio through DVI using their special converter, but this is only with the Radeon HD series (perhaps not even all of them...I'm not completely sure)

I have the Radeon HD 3870. It is supposed to carry audio through DVI, but I can't see that it works. The reason I care is that I want to connect my HDTV to it.

No matter what way you put it DVI does not carry audio, hence why it's called Digital Video Interface... HDMI can carry audio, sure, but it certainly wont be coming from the same place your video is coming from

"DVI to HDMI audio/video adapter"

I know DVI is technically only video, but I'm pretty sure ATI uses a propriatary form of DVI. Probably using that other "link" that most monitors/video cards don't tend to use.
