Sound problem.

Recently I pulled out my old Compaq Presario 5240 which is running Windows 98. My problem is that if I play a CD through winamp it plays fine but if I play any sounds that are stored on the hard drive they don't work. They appear to play but nothings comes out. mp3s won't plays, .wav files won't play nor will any of Window' sounds work when the computer is starting up.
Any help would be appreciated.

Could it possibibly be that your media playing software got shaged up somwehre alng the way? could be a virus? or spyware? but thats just my guess!
 
hmmm

Well the media software still works..........it' plays the music off the cd but not anything stored on the hard drive....could this be any kind of hard ware trouble???
