Sound problem

I am working on a friends computer and it is very old. Infact the ports at the back are not colour coded.

So I am going to ask a really stupid question: The speaker goes into the output plug right?

OK so I am now the biggest idiot on this forum but let me assure you I have good computer knowledge but my strength is software.

Now when plugging it into the output - everytime sound plays through the computer I get this horrible sound.

You know how when sometimes you press backspace and there is nothing to delete you get a beep? Well its like that repeating at a higher pitch.

I have installed the latest drivers for the sound card.

When i go to volume control - if I mute digital it doesnt make the sound anymore.

So this may be the source of the problem.

Does anybody have any clues? Please be gentle with me.

Which sound card do you have and which OS are you running on?
Since you tried all the available solutions, the next thing you can look into are the compatability issues of the card and your OS. The card itself, whether it's time to get a new one or not. Then, the speakers, whether it's the speakers causing that noise or not.

Have you tried a different set of speakers? And if you have any other available sound cards, you can try it too.

The sound card drivers are crystal WDM

I dont know about the sound card make or model. It isnt infront of me at the moment but I can check tomorrow if you give me instructions on how I might find out

The OS is Windows XP

I have tried two sets of speakers and both make the sound.

It is a second hand computer purchased from a university so sound card being on its last legs is something I cant rule out

I will be looking at his computer tomorrow (it is 9pm as I type this) so if anybody can throw around some things I could try or ideas that would be good.

Thank you for your help
