It also says that no audio device is detected, please respond! I need help asap, going to bed as I am done typing this. Please offer all the help possible.

go into your device manager. Right click on my computer-->manage-->device manager

Are there any items with exclamation points?

go to the website of the manufacturer of your sound card and download the drivers. Install them and restart.

also make sure you don't have them muted.

Click on start and then run, type in dxdiag. Then click on the sound tab and your sound card should be listed there.

Ok, there are no drivers. Under device.
Name: Modem #0 Line Playback (emulated)
Device ID: (Blank)
Manufacturer ID:1
Product ID:81
Type: Emulated
Default Device: Yes

----------notes------------
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

go back into your control panel and open the "Add Hardware" wizard. It will scan your system and find the card. If it does not see the card or anything that it can't recognize, then pull the card and reinstall it.

Do you have any other PCI cards installed?

I'm not sure as far as cards for sound, I don't know how to check. Im sure Windows XP ( Dell ) Demennsion 4550 came with one.

Can you uninstall this device completely from your computer and start over? In Device Manager, you can right-click the problem device and click "Uninstall". Then, on next boot, it should recognize it again. If it does not, click the option at the top of the Device Manager that will scan for new hardware, that will surely recognize it.

After that, go to http://support.dell.com/support/dow...0&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=1&fileid=67126 and try that driver.

lol its ok, glad you got your laptop figured out. Dell really should bundle the right software/drivers with their computers, it creates big problems (as you know first hand)
