sound not working

Help my computer like locked down. My little sister shut down My Dell Dimension 4700 by holding in the power button until it shut off and it wouldnt do anything it didnt have anything on it we had to reinstall windows xp and all the programs and everything but the sound is not working and the computer dosent even detect the speakers and every time i get an IM on AIM it goes ding and its not the speakers making the noise. what is the problem? please help.
 
you need to reinstall the sound card drivers. You can either download them off the manufacturer's website or use the ones on the "drivers and Utilities" disc that came with the computer.
