sound not working

i can hear sounds like when i play music off of windowa media player, or itunes, but not sounds like when i am instant messaging and when i try to play computer games. pleeezzzzzzzz help me! :confused:
 
The windows messenger sounds are probably turned off in the options of the instant messenger and have a look in the gaming sound options to see if the sounds has been turned off or lowered.
