Sound not working.

So I came home today from work and my volume icon thats usually at the bottom right corner on the start menu wasn't their and I can't hear anything. I have a Compaq Presario V5000. Can anyone help me with what driver or what I should install and why it did this so unsuspectedly.
 
Have you rebooted the system since first starting it up? Sometimes Windows won't see everything load up like it should. That's more of an XP problem. Your option would be to download the audio driver set direct from HP for that model.

Once you select the version being run you then come to the next page where the audio section is seen right away. Those usually go right on.

 
Which version of Windows are you running there? One thing right off to try is going into the sound, video, and game controllers section of the device manager. Once in there look for any items seeing a yellow mark on them. You should see the actual name for the audio chip.

You have to right click on the executable to create a desktop shortcut since it doesn't make any new entries in the system registry but simply scans all system information for viewing under various catagories. But it will ID the exact audio chip for you or you can right click on the yellow marked item to choose the update driver option to see if Windows will then automatically locate the correct drivers.
 
Hopefully the sound chip didn't go on you there. That could be one reason other then something making the drivers inactive.

With the SIW tool that will show the information on that as well as everything. Then you can go after the correct set of drivers to see those reinstalled.

Have you tried selecting the update driver option to see if Windows will locate a newer version? If you see the latest are installed message then you will have to select the uninstall option there to see a reinstall once the correct set is known. The image here shows how SIW lists far more details under the sound, video, and game controller heading.

 
You might want to make sure the device isn't disabled in the BIOS. If it's not set to "automatic" and it's not disabled in the Device Manager, the sound chip (which I believe is a Conexant in those things) has gone belly up.
 
Since i was still under warrenty with HP im sending it to them and their replacing the sound card or w/e but Thanks everyone.
 
That was the best move there then since they have to solve the problem for you! Hopefully you have a better sound quality when you get it back.
