sound last night - gone this morning!

I was watching an AVI file from my camera last night and doing some work with some sound files later - all was fine. Woke this morning to resume the work, and the sound is completely gone on my system. I've been playing around for a few hours, and can't track down the issue. I did the following -

- Checked that everything was plugged in
- Took my Audigy Sound card out, reseated it, then moved it to another vacant slot
- Tried switching to the Mobo sound outlet
- Tried using an old Creative Labs Sound card
Checked every program I used last night of to see if I somehow turned the volume down or muted it

None of this unearthed the problem. Interestingly, I also started up Audacity to record sound then played a few sound files, as well as some randomly selected clips on Youtube, and nothing registered on the program. It's normally set up on 'what you hear' , so whether it's onboard sound or online, it should have shown up on Audacity.

Either something on board has messed with the volume settings in a way that I can't find, or perhaps my motherboard is having issues.

Anyone have a clue what could be going on?

Thanks

Just an update. I managed to switch to the Motherboard's sound output, so it doesn't seem to be a an issue with the Mobo. Still doesn't explain what the problem is with the sound card. Windows 7 Troubleshooter recognizes the card and claims all is okay - clearly though, I'm not getting any sound out of it.

Check the sound properties to make sure the right sound card is being used for playback. Also go into sounds and make sure you have a windows sound scheme selected instead of "none". The sound card can still be bad even though device manager says everything is ok.
