sound issues after new installation

at the end of my witts........have flash installed nothing with that. Powerpoint and no sound. just a boom out of the speakers. no sound from video or utube. pictures ok. plays mp3 ok. upgraded Windows media player. when i boot i get sound when logging on. WMA files no sound. Gibberish out the speakers.
any other ideas...

Do you have anything like ffdshow installed?

its one of those logictech 5.1 speaker system. i found the problem though. it was some setting for how the speakers broadcast. Matrix to be exact. its working though...........thanks.
