Sound is distorted/scatchy.

I don't know a lot about sound cards and such, but I'll do my best to describe the problem. I've had my computer for about a year now, and I just reinstalled Windows XP about two weeks ago. I was listening to music on Winamp, and my sound was working fine. I paused the music while I went away for a few minutes, and I came back to scratchy, distorted music. Now every sound played on my computer sounds strange. I used the Windows troubleshooter with no luck. I am a little confused that I have both Legacy Audio and SigmaTel C-Major Audio listed in my device manager, but the volume control lists SigmaTel as my mixer. I have tried reinstalling drivers, but this does not solve the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

in winamp, preferences, output click on directsound or whichever u r using, select ur card, and enable hardware acceleration, if that doesnt work search the web for latest drivers etc..
try playing in windows media player - is there a problem there?

I did update drivers, they're dated 1/18/2005. In Winamp the hardware acceleration option is grayed out, but the sound problems are not limited to Winamp. Any program that runs in Windows has distorted sound.

Ok, I think I found out what's wrong. I left my computer off for an extended period of time, and the sound seems to be working fine now. This leads me to suspect the problems were heat-related, most likely from my overclocked video card. So I'm going to lower the card's clock speed and see if the audio distortion happens again. I'll post back later if I confirm or disconfirm my hypothesis.
