What is the differance between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 sound
Is sarround sound really that noticible when playing games and watching movies on the comp, can you get good quality (noticible sarround sound) from a cheaper sound card

The first number represents how many "satalites" there are and the second is how many bass speakers there are.

5.1 has 5 satalites and 1 bass.

In general the more speakers the better the surround effect.
As long as your sound card can support the speakers (some sounds cards only go up to 2.1 or 5.1) you can still get pretty good quality.
Surround sound is very noticeable. In games it helps a lot in finding snipers and you can hear cars comming up behind you. I have 5.1 and it is great.

5.1 dosn't mean that there are only 5 satellites and 1 bass. There will be 5 speakers that output a higher frequency than the subwoofer, but most speakers come with a small woofer as well as a tweeter.
