Sound from computer speakers only as good as the sound card itself?

Actually it applies to speakers and sound cards.
The better the quality, the better the sound.
This also applies to home audio/video equipment.

That's partially true. However, you're not going to get good sound out of crappy speakers even with a REALLY nice soundcard.

Yeah. The speakers and amp are FAR more important than a soundcard. Most people could probably recognise a difference between a £20 and a £500 sound card, and they'd probably just about give the nod to the more expensive one, but ultimately it's not an increase in quality that any average music listening/movie watcher/game playing person is going to need, or even be aware of after 10 minutes.

My home theater setup currently consists of some PMC speakers, a Linn pre amp and a Linn power amp, with the sound coming from an 8 year old computer with a soundblaster16 ISA card. It sounds awesome. Maybe not quite as good as it could, but who cares.

A good sound card is when you buy one and it is a PCI sound card. Some good speakers are from a reliable brand and that have some good reviews.

My Sound:
Sound Card - Creative Audigy 5.1 Sound card
Speakers - Logitech X 540 5.1 Surround Sound

Together they cost be $120 AU! :D:)

Also, it depends if you play CD files on the comp or MP3 files. MP3 is worse, but to me sounds the same.
