Has anyone ever came across there sound not working because it is supposedly in use by another device. I tried everything I could think of to fix the problem, reinstall the drivers, tried to kill certain processes and even buy a new sound card thinking the built in one was damaged!

Error message when trying to play test sound

"Windows cannot play the sound %SytemRoot%\Media\Windows Xp Errow.wav. Your sound card my be in use."

If more information is need, please let me know!

Was one of my ideas!

However, my aunt was never given restore cds for windows xp and I don't want to install a pirated copy.

So, the built-in audio was giving you problems, you bought an audio card, and you are still having problems with that? Do you have the most recent drivers for your new card?

Try disabling the on-board audio in your BIOS. Make sure the drivers for your new card are up to date. And, make sure you have your new card selected as the default device in the Sound control panel.

!

Completely forgot about disabling it in the Bios, I'll try that and see if it fixes the problem!
