Just today my sound has started cutting out after being on for a few minutes! I noticed while playing CoD4 that the sound buzzed for a second, then went out. i closed CoD4, opened up WMP, and tried to play a song. then all my songs got a little X just to the left of them and a notice came up saying WMP could not play this song. i tried going to Pandora.com (free radio website) but nothing came from my speakers then either.

WTF? :mad::mad::mad:

Have you tried restarting the system to see if any sound is heard after the reboot? You may have knocked out a driver or two. That would be the first thought before assuming the card simply went bellly up on you there.

Restarting the computer lets the sound work again for a few minutes then it buzzes out again.

Either a total removal of software/drivers and seeing an update is needed or the card is warming up and cutting out entirely. It does seem to point at the card itself more then anything since even when there's a software or driver glitch you'll hear something until trying to run a game or player which will then crash on you.

its Soundmax integrated audio on my P5K.

heres a new development: i uninstalled my sound drivers, and tried installing the soundmax drivers on asus's website for my motherboard. it didnt work though, saying "unable to compare versions-aborting"

this is on Vista 32bit. i tried the beta and the first download and neither worked... both gave me the error i mentioned.

I generally avoid the betas seen at support sites. Unfortunately you had to go the selection process all over again since the page couldn't be saved with the links posted there.

Did you try removing everything and installing from the disk or simply go directly back to Asus? The idea would be to allow the download to update everything from the original set to avoid seeing the error again.

Hello, unfortunately I am having the same problem with my Socket 775 P5K-E/WIFI motherboard with onboard SPDIF HD sound.

Unfortunately, the only drivers available for Windows 7 64bit are beta and I cannot use the control panel thing installed with the drivers to control my speakers properly.

I've tried using the non-beta Vista drivers in compatability mode, but I get that error message about being 'unable to compare versions, aborting'. I wonder if there is a way to get these Vista 64bit drivers working in Windows 7 64bit.

Interesting. I had this problem with my X-fi xtrememusic a few weeks back. The sound will eventually come back after a few min. Do you know if your computer is overheating?

Ah hello diduknowthat!

I'm not having problems with the speakers cutting out, but because I am using the SPDIF out, I need to be able to access the control panel installed along with the drivers for the card. The SPDIF goes straight to an AV AMP, which isn't reproducing Pro Logic Surround Sound in my 5.1 configuration at the moment, I think I just need to configure them... But this seems to be a problem with only beta drivers being available.

I'm not having any problems with overheating or sound cutting out.

Definately a driver issue. got any older ones that came with the motherboard driver disk or something?

Unfortunately, the drivers which came with the motherboard (particularly for the onboard sound) were designed for Windows Vista or earlier.

The drivers for XP are the only ones which are not BETA too!

Is there a work around? I've tried using the XP drivers already.. But maybe there is a way to confuse the pre-installation checks and allow the installation of the wrong drivers?
