Sound card/Speaker combo Q...

...I guess this may be covered in old threads, but here goes anyways.

Is it worth getting a quality sound card (Audigy 2?) if I'm only running 2.0 or 2.1 speakers? I play a few 3D games, but I mainly don't want lots of speakers and cables all over my desk. Is there an alternative?

A better sound card will make a difference. The Audigys also support EAX and enviromental sound stuff so it will sound much more realistic. Make sure that the speakers you have arent crap though or you won't be able to hear the added detail.
