Sound Card Question

Is it worth getting a sound card for someone who is just a gamer? Not a big music or movie enthusiast ?? I know you can get some for like around $25.

And are sound cards typically pci slot??? thanks guys

There are usb as well as pci type sound devices with pci being used most. Even for gaming sound quality is one thing fussed over often. That also decides which model by the brand chosen is preferred like the Xtreme Gamer model over Xtreme Music or Xtreme Audio by Creative as one example.

I just answered someone's question on a Creative PCI-Express type sound card. That's the latest means of adding a sound card in by simply using an unused slot there. Too bad I had already bought two pci models(one for a spare now) to see how one of those would work out.

the PCIe sound cards are usually more expensive, just one more thing to consider if you're just a gamer. :-P

The typical PCI-E model runs about as high or even more then the X-Fi Fatality series with the addon panel for a 5 1/4" drive bay. But what do you expect from the latest line out. Those will come down in time just like WD's new 1tb hard drive seeing a price close to $300 for those.

Despite the higher prices seen initially you can easily see where that type of card will have a place. If you have a board with only two pci slots and plan on running a tuner card along with a modem or nik card you can still have something other then onboard sound.

Creative's EAX effects now using OpenAL in Vista have been a long time favorite with gamers. Now you can have that along with other pci devices in that sense.
