Sound Card Problem

My system is maybe 1-2 years old, I aquired it about 6 months ago, and everything worked fine. Lacked a little speed at first, but I raised her nice.

One day I go to play Halo, and I get this amazingly loud and annoying cracking sound. Like repetitive cracking, (sounds like thespeakers are blown to hell). So I rip the speakers out, plug in a new pair. Try again, same thing. Unplug those, bring my expensive stereo down (which I know works) and plug it in, same problem. Not with just halo, by the way. Music, programs, even when I adjust the volume of the pc and it makes that beep to tell you how loud the volume is, it cracks uncontrollably. Since the soundcard is built into the motherboard I'm thinking this can maybe be fixed? Or is my soundcard somehow blown or something, and should I then buy a PCI slot (I think that's what it's called, still new to computers) card. Everything else on this pc works fine.

I'd try a few things first. Perhaps you could load new drivers and DirectX. Maybe try a LiveCD or something that can use the soundcard outside windows so you can test it's hardware related and not software.

Sound cards can give out. I had one that would lock the system up each time it was used, but it was fine once I disabled it...

I'm currently using it on C-Media WDM Audio Driver. I installed this driver after I re-wrote my hard drive, and it worked fine for a while, then started cracking. Also, I used this driver before the re-write and it worked fine.

my relative has this cracking sound. i ran windows update and updated the sound driver and poof is like magic.
