I am building a new pc. I am a not a heavy gamer, maybe a mild gamer. I use my pc for watching movies/tv, listining to music. some gaming, and design purposes (photoshop/Dreamweaver) and then your normal browsing and pc stuff.

The mobo I have has 7.1 channel audio codec RealTek ALC850.
-- how is that... should I upgrade to the SOund Blaster Live 7.1 24 bit or is it worth it to get the Audigy 2z?

Thanks

This is a personal question. YOU really wont know the correct answer until you have listened to your music, tv audio, and games with both your current audio and the alternative cards....

Also, what percentage of the overall "multimedia" experience would you consider the audio to be? I care more about the sound than I do the video.. that is why I have a low-medium end video card and a higher end sound card....

I have onboard RealTek 7.1 audio and it sounds just fine for me. I use my computer for generally the same uses as you do. See how you like the sound with the onboard, and if you're not satisfied you can always just buy a sound card later.

I care about the video and alos for the sound... But if I can have good sound (by good sound I mean clarity and not causing delays in gaming or movies) for a cheap price and not over spend I would like that as well. B/C I have a good-great speaker system - Logitech 5.1 sorround sound , cant remember the exact model number but costed me around 100.

well, i have used onboard, SB Live 5.1!, Audigy 2zs, and the X-Fi, and i must say the audigy2zs and x-fi are the best, i couldnt believe what i was missing out on when i got these cards, you hear many things in games that you never heard before, and you can tell where sounds are coming from easily. Of course, you need nice speakers or headphones for these cards, a $20 speaker system wouldnt be worth it.

my speaker system was actually 50 dollars from newegg.com

Its the LOGITECH X-530 BLK 5.1 SPEAKER RTL
(Serial#: 0LI78E0800000HV) - hows that for a speaker system?

then i would just use the onboard, im guessing you have the X-530? nice speakers, but i wouldnt invest in a $100+ sound card for them.
