sound card not being recognised

I recently installed a new p4 531 3ghz cpu. After installing it my sound didn't work. I looked in device manager and it does not show up in there anymore. Have also tried changing pci slot but still not working. My sound card is sound blaster live 5.1 digital. Has this happened to anyone else, any advice sincerely welcomed.

It sounds like your card quit. Have you tried reinstalling the software and drivers or installing an update? If the card was working and the drivers were now unseen due to the swap of cpus you should have seen a prompt when Windows detected it as a new hardware.

You can removing and reinstalling the drivers to see if the card is then listed in the sound and game controllers section in the DM. But it probably decided to let go at the most inconvenient time.

Yes installing a new CPU should not have affected your sound card. However since you've changed slots you need to install the drivers and software again anyhow so try that. If it's not showing up in Device Manager though I'm not sure that there is much hope. You could re install windows and hope but I know that is a pain.

Just looked in device manager again and it states that I have 2 cpus and system also states that I have 2. Could this be the problem.

My sound card is not being recognised in the sound control panel. Do you have any idea why my computer states that I have two cpu when it is not dual core.

Yeah. Hyperthreading.

Anyways, it sounds like your soundcard died. If you reboot, you should see it come up in the list of PCI devices during enumeration (but you have to know what you're looking for. It won't just tell you SoundBlaster card). If you don't, the chances are very good that it's dead. You can use the Pause key to pause the screen so that you can read it. It's the next screen after the BIOS post, and it usually goes by pretty quick.

Just about to do it now. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new sound card. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

If your card did go by the wayside any driver updates won't be any good. But the main download site is at http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/ I had an Audigy 2 ZS Gamer take a walk on the last build without warning.

Did you update the bios by chance when going to upgrade the cpu? That may have returned the bios to the default settings where the onboard is now enabled. It wouldn't hurt to take a fast look before tossing the card.
