Sound Card Malfunctioning? Strange sounds, Please Help!

Everything was working fine yesterday. Today, I turn my computer on.. every time a sound is to be played, a loud "THUD THUD THUD THUD" like a helicopter plays over it. It stops as soon as the sound stops. I tried re-installing the drivers with no success. The sound card I have is built into the motherboard .. could that have fried somehow?

Yes it could have. The only way to test that is to put a PCI sound card in to see if the problem goes away.
 
Hm.. I restarted the computer.. problem didn't go away.
I restarted it in Knoppix to see if it was somehow a Windows issue .. problem didn't go away.
I restarted again and it was better.

Probably the card is on the way out tho .. I'll invest in a PCI one.
