Sound Card Help

I have a laptop, but the sound card that came with the laptop isn't a very good one. I have a Acer 5738z. The sound doesn't go very loud through my earphones. I was wondering whether a USB Sound Card would enhance the sound output as well as allowing me to have a wider volume range? It that what a USB Sound Card does?

Have you checked the audio equalizer to see if any inputs are set low? If you don't have that readily available you can access via Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / audio tab, sound playback, volume button. Laptop volume knob at max?

If you are playing music, is the player volume at max?

You should not need much output to deafen yourself. Crappy earphones? Earphones with integral volume control which is turned down?
