sound card causing computer to lag

I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music. My comp - 2.4 ghz p4, 1 gb ddr ram, nvidia 6800 graphic card.

Whenever I run a game, the graphics lag. If I disable the sound card, it works fine. I tried installing a new graphic card of the same model, but I still had the same problem.

I think this problem happened suddenly a few years back. I am pretty sure it used to work before.

I tried reformatting, and disabling onboard audio.

I have had this problem for years, and I have not been able to play any games since. Any ideas?

Do you have Vista?

There have been several driver revisions in the past few years. You should look into updating them.

And use Alchemy in vista.

Sounds like a driver issue to me though.
